What it is
Shockwave therapy uses a handheld device to deliver acoustic pulses through the skin to a specific area, such as a tendon or a tight band of muscle. It does not involve electricity passing through the body or any incision.
Patients commonly describe a tapping sensation. Some areas can feel tender during or after a session, and intensity can be adjusted.
Where it fits
- Considered for some persistent soft tissue and tendon complaints
- Usually combined with exercise and other care rather than used alone
- Discussed only after Dr. Caruso evaluates the area
